How Far Ahead You Need to Book
Here’s the timeline we’d give a friend.
Six to eight weeks out is the comfortable window. That’s enough time for an estimate, a color decision, a scheduled start date, and a buffer if anything shifts. For a Thanksgiving deadline, that means reaching out in late September or early October.
Three to four weeks out is still workable for a single room or a small scope, but your options narrow. You may not get your first choice of dates.
Under two weeks is where it gets difficult. Our interior season runs heavy from October through December, and 3S Painting LLC doesn’t rush a job to squeeze it in. We’d rather schedule you properly in January than hand you a room that was hurried.
The other thing people underestimate is the color decision. Choosing a color takes most homeowners longer than the painting does. How Long a Room Actually Takes
These are realistic ranges for a professionally prepped and painted space. Prep is included in these numbers, because prep is most of the work.
Standard bedroom or office (walls only): 1 day
Bedroom with walls, ceiling, and trim: 1–2 days
Living room or great room with high ceilings: 2–3 days
Kitchen walls (excluding cabinets): 1–2 days
Cabinet refinishing: 4–7 days, and it’s a separate conversation entirely
Hallways, stairwell, and entryway together: 2–3 days
Whole first floor, open concept: 4–7 days
Add time if there’s drywall repair, wallpaper removal, or popcorn ceiling removal in the scope. Those aren’t add-ons we tack on to inflate a number — they’re the difference between paint that looks good and paint that just covers. 1. The entryway and front hall. This is the first thing anyone sees and it takes the most abuse — scuffs, bags, shoulders against the wall. It’s usually a small space, which means it’s fast, and the impact is disproportionate to the cost.
2. The main gathering room. Living room, family room, wherever people end up sitting. It’s where guests spend the most time, and it’s where dated or dingy walls are most noticeable under evening light.
3. Trim, doors, and baseboards. Underrated. Freshly painted white trim against existing wall color can make a whole floor read as renovated, even if you never touch the walls.
4. The dining room. Only if you’re actually seating people there. If holiday dinner happens at the kitchen island, put the money elsewhere.
5. The powder room. Small, quick, and every single guest will see it up close.
